YouTube Channel Access: Permissions and Ownership Handoffs

YouTube channel permissions let an owner assign access without sharing the owner’s Google password. An invitation to edit a channel, a Brand Account role and a completed ownership handoff describe different arrangements and need separate confirmation.
Describe the intended access
Start with the work: upload a video, review analytics, manage live production or administer the channel. Match that task to a role shown in the current permissions interface. Do not assume that a role with a familiar name automatically includes every capability a contractor requests.
Use invitations instead of shared secrets
Where channel permissions support the task, invite the authorised person through the official workflow. Confirm the invited identity and acceptance status. Passwords, verification codes and browser session files should not become a substitute for a defined team role, especially when several people work on the same production.
Document any proposed handoff
For a legitimate ownership or management change, record the channel identifier, the existing arrangement, the requested destination and the official process available to that arrangement. Verify the platform terms and any restrictions before promising that ownership can be transferred. An email saying an invitation was sent is not proof that the whole handoff is complete.
Test the task and remove unused access
After an invitation is accepted, test the smallest necessary task. Maintain a list of people, roles and responsibilities, and review it when a project ends. Resolve missing permissions through the owner’s administration tools instead of giving a contractor broad account recovery access for a single upload.
Practical review checklist
| Review area | What to record |
|---|---|
| Editorial task | Define the action that must be performed |
| Invitation | Confirm the intended identity and accepted status |
| Ownership | Check the actual arrangement and official process |
| Offboarding | Remove access that is no longer required |
Common questions
Does an editor invitation make someone the channel owner?
No. Verify the role and its capabilities rather than treating access as ownership.
Should a contractor receive the Google password?
Use supported channel permissions for the required work instead of sharing the owner’s credentials.
